I remember the first time I stepped into a hospital with my camera slung over my shoulder. It was a whole new world for me, one filled with a blend of emotions. My name is Shaun McKenna, and I’ve been a photographer for years, but nothing quite prepared me for the journey ahead as a healthcare photographer.
My first assignment was to capture the everyday moments within the hospital – the interactions between patients and healthcare professionals, the quiet determination of those undergoing treatment, and the unwavering dedication of the staff.
One of the most rewarding aspects of my job is being able to document the progress of patients on their journey to recovery. From the initial stages of treatment to the triumphant moments of victory, I’ve had the privilege of capturing it all through my lens. Each photograph tells a story.
But it’s not just about the patients – it’s also about the healthcare professionals who work tirelessly behind the scenes. From the doctors and nurses to the administrators and support staff, each plays a vital role in the healthcare ecosystem. And it’s my job to shine a light on their dedication and hard work, to show the world the unsung heroes of the healthcare industry.
Of course, there are moments of sadness too – moments of loss and grief that are an inevitable part of life in a hospital. But even in those moments, there is beauty to be found – in the love and support of family and friends, in the memories shared, and in the legacy left behind.
As I reflect on my journey as a healthcare photographer, I realise that it’s not just a job – it’s a privilege to be able to capture moments of joy and sorrow, of hope and healing, and to share them with others.
Over the years I have worked for many hospitals such as Cabrini, Epworth, Healthscope along with many private practices. These have covered everything from physiotherapists, dermatologists, pharmacists, dentists, optometrists, radiologists, medical laboratories, pediatrics, surgery, orthopedics, radiology, oncology, geriatrics, physical therapy and occupational therapy
