How Much Equipment is Enough?

As a videographer and photographer, the question of “How much equipment is enough?” often pops up. My friends joke that I could open a camera store with the gear I haul around. From multiple camera bodies to an arsenal of lenses, tripods, lights, and a drone or two, my equipment list seems never-ending.

One day, while setting up for a shoot at a playground opening, a curious child asked, “Why do you need so many cameras?” I smiled and explained, “Well, each one has a special job. One for close-ups, one for wide shots, one for video, and one just because it looks cool!”

Of course, there’s also the never-ending quest for the perfect shot. I often find myself lugging around gear I haven’t used in months, just in case. My car’s trunk has become a mobile studio, with cases, bags, and gadgets filling every nook and cranny.

Despite the occasional over-packing, each piece of equipment has its moment to shine. The joy of capturing the perfect image or video clip makes carrying all that gear worth it. And let’s be honest, there’s always room for one more lens, right?

A photographer friend once shared a hilarious story that has since become one of my favorites. He was at a dinner party, mingling with guests, when the host approached him with an enthusiastic compliment: “Your photos are amazing. What kind of camera do you use?”

My friend smiled politely, appreciating the kind words, but he couldn’t help but think about how people often credit the equipment rather than the skill behind the lens. The evening went on, filled with laughter, clinking glasses, and delightful conversation. After everyone had finished their meal, my friend decided to turn the tables a bit.

He walked up to the host, who had just served a delicious spread that had everyone raving. With a cheeky grin, he said, “That was a lovely meal. What kind of oven do you have?”

The host paused, then burst into laughter, instantly getting the point. It was a gentle reminder that while tools and equipment are important, it’s the person using them who truly makes the magic happen. Since he told me this story, I can’t help but quote it whenever someone admires my photos and asks about my gear. It’s a perfect way to highlight the blend of skill, creativity, and passion that goes into every shot, no matter what camera I’m using.
