Capturing the Impact of Changing Places Facilities
As a videographer and storyteller, I’ve had the privilege of documenting the profound impact of Changing Places facilities across Victoria. These specialised public toilet and change room facilities are designed to enable individuals with high support needs to participate fully in their communities. By providing amenities that standard accessible toilets do not, Changing Places make a significant difference in the lives of people with complex disabilities and their carers.
Changing Places facilities are equipped with features such as adult-sized change tables, ceiling hoists, peninsular toilets, privacy screens, and additional circulation space. These features ensure that people who cannot use standard accessible toilets can still access recreational and tourist attractions, parks, community spaces, entertainment, and sporting venues.
Through my work, I’ve seen firsthand how these facilities transform lives. I’ve captured moments at various locations where families and individuals can enjoy outings without the stress and limitations posed by inadequate facilities. The smiles of children and the relief of carers, knowing they have a safe and dignified place to attend to personal needs, are powerful testimonials to the importance of these amenities.
My videos often feature interviews with users and their families, highlighting personal stories and experiences. These narratives emphasise the independence and freedom that Changing Places facilities provide. For many, it’s the difference between being isolated at home and being active members of their community.
The installation of these facilities at popular sites like parks and entertainment venues not only enhances accessibility but also fosters inclusivity. By documenting these changes, I aim to raise awareness and support for the continued expansion of Changing Places. It’s a story of progress and hope, showing how thoughtful infrastructure can lead to a more inclusive society for everyone.
